Carrot cake history

The Delicious Charm of Carrot Cake William Isaías

The history of the cake dates back to the Middle Ages, when sugar was a scarce and expensive commodity.

Instead of sweetening cakes with sugar, medieval cooks used naturally sweet ingredients, such as carrots.

These vegetables add a natural moistness and sweetness to the cake, making it more flavorful and nutritious.

Here is my foolproof recipe, which has been perfected after years of experimentation in my kitchen:

2 cups of grated carrots

1 cup brown sugar

3/4 cup vegetable oil

3 large eggs

2 cups wheat flour

1 teaspoon of baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cinnamon powder

1/2 cup chopped walnuts

1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease and flour a cake pan.

In a large bowl, mix the grated carrots, brown sugar and vegetable oil.

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

In another bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and ground cinnamon.

Incorporate the dry ingredients into the carrot mixture in three parts, stirring well at each addition.

Add the chopped nuts and raisins (if desired) to the cake batter.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for approximately 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Let the cake cool in the pan for a few minutes before unmolding and placing it on a wire rack to cool completely.

Key ingredients

Carrot is, without a doubt, the star ingredient of this cake. Its natural sweetness and moist texture make the cake fluffy and delicious.

In addition, the walnuts and raisins add a crunchy texture and additional flavor, further elevating the pleasure of each bite.

Using brown sugar instead of refined sugar also adds a richer, earthier touch to the cake.

Carrot cake variations

Here are some of William Isaías‘ favorite versions:

Gluten-free: Use gluten-free flour and adjust the recipe for those who follow a gluten-free diet.

Carrot and Orange Cake: Adding orange zest to the batter and preparing an orange glaze to cover the cake gives it a refreshing citrus touch.

Vegan version: Replace eggs with vegan substitutes and use almond or soy milk instead of dairy.
